52 Weeks Project | Week 7 | Hansei

Hansei is the Japanese word and expression for self reflection. To acknowledge one's mistakes and pledge for improvement one way or another. And especially when you are running a business of any kind, this sort of self reflection for self improvement has to happen from time to time at varying degrees. And these night time city views over downtown Indianapolis sent me to that mental state.

I was in town for an engagement shoot and afterward I grabbed some dinner, scoured over google maps for a rooftop parking garage to get some awesome views of the city, parked up, and took some self portraits to reflect the time, place, mood, and everything that was happening for me. And it got me thinking about that 17 year old girl I once was with a dream and a strong spirit to chase after it.

I'll probably dedicate an entire week's photo to that very thing - maybe even write a letter to that girl - but for now, this is me peering into a city I had never been to before for work for a job that I created for myself as a creative entrepreneur. I've been full time now for a little over a year but have been practicing this photography craft for over a decade now shooting weddings 6 of those years. And during that whole time I now find myself living the dream my relentless soul wished for ever since I was a little kid - to be an artist, in all aspects of the word. To explore, document, and create in all capacities. To help people see the beauty in the world, in themselves, and what they share with others.

To me, that all makes life so much more worth living.

Below is this week's behind the scenes video diary which kinda turned out more as a quick video snippet/talking rant instead of the how to's for this week. Things are slightly slowing down for the next week so I will attempt making something a little more in depth next week ^.^

52 Weeks Project | Week 5 | Made of Stars

The most amazing thing I have found out about life is that we all came about from the same matter. That every molecule, atom, and piece of matter is recycled from across all of time and all lifeforms are made up of the existence of other things. And that within every cell, molecule, and atom that exists are the same components that make up stars.

And because of that, inside each and every one of us is a power that ties us to the universe and gives us abilities that I have come to find absolutely magical. But also empowering through my struggles and a focus when clarity is much needed.

It'll be the magic of my life to hold onto that connection and to not only keep it, but to let it grow. To help cultivate it into a higher awareness that creates a beautiful life for not only myself, but for everyone around me.

In the slideshow above, you'll see some extra photos taken for this weeks photo and I had the hardest time figuring out which to use to portray the message I wanted! I fully edited a second photo which is the first up in this slideshow. But after taking a Facebook poll on which was people's favorites, the photo used was voted for in a landslide!

I kept things simple this week for today's shoot utilizing a artificial light (something I actually NEVER do!), and using some wall space at home for the background. See the video below for some behind the scenes in how this was made and edited!

52 Weeks Project | Week 4 | A Moment in Time

This week's photo is all about finding the calm in the chaos. And what better way to capture that than to embrace the concept in the middle of America's midwestern city of Chicago during a work trip!

I was up there for an anniversary session with one of my past bride and grooms, who got married nearly 3 years ago, and they were wanting some updated portraits of the two of them. And I was sooo happy to see them again! Photos from their session will be up asap (so stoked to share these guys).

But instead of traveling alone up to the city for a day or two, my hubby and baby joined me along for the ride! And it made the work trip into a mini vacay. They helped me with this week's photo (mainly making sure my camera didn't get stolen haha) and we took the time to explore and test the limits of a toddler in a big city (which were suprisingly pretty amazing!)

This week's behind the scenes video has little snippets from our travels around and a more in depth look into how this photo was made. Check it out below:

I really embraced a simple concept this week since we were on the move constantly. But I get moments while being on a constant go where I need to sit still, relax, and give my brain a minute to catch up with everything that is happening around me. Or I'll leave the situation not able to really remember what was going on at all.

So I wanted to photograph that concept where I do that very thing while the rest of the world moves on by. Like time freezes for me and the rest of the world feels like it's moving in a fast forward motion. And so, I wanted to capture some images of various people and cars in a blur while I stood completely still.

Since I don't have many behind the scenes photos from this week (all the ones I did have are featured in the video above) here are a few photos from our travels in Chicago over the last few days.
